Synthetic fibers do not produce their own oils the way natural hair does, so the fixes that work on your own hair (heavy oils, hot tools) often backfire on a wig: oils attract dust and dull the fiber, and heat can permanently kink it. Here is a simple, low-risk routine.
1. Detangle before you do anything else
Start at the ends and work up in small sections with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. A light mist of a detangler such as Wig Detangler & Cuticle Sealer reduces friction so the fibers slide apart instead of snapping.
2. Wash gently, rinse cool
Use cool water and a small amount of a moisturizing shampoo. Do not scrub. Rinse until the water runs clear, then press out excess water with a towel rather than wringing.
3. Condition the lengths, not the cap
A leave-in like Tangle Free Leave-In Conditioner keeps fibers soft and reduces static. Keep it off the cap and knots so the wig keeps its shape.
4. Air dry on a stand
Let the wig dry fully on a wig stand or an upturned bowl. Skip the blow dryer unless the wig is labeled heat-friendly.
5. Finish with an oil-free shine
This is the step most people skip. A fine mist of Oil Free Wig Shine restores the light-reflecting finish of new fiber without the greasy build-up that oil sprays leave behind. Hold the can about 10 inches away and mist lightly over the top layer.
Between washes
Store the wig on a stand, detangle before bed, and refresh with the shine mist as needed. Most synthetic wigs only need a full wash every 10 to 15 wears.
