Walk down the wig-care aisle of any beauty supply store and half the shine sprays say oil sheen and the other half say oil-free. They are not two versions of the same thing. They work differently on the fiber and they age differently over a week of wear. This is the difference, and how to choose.
What oil does on a wig
On human hair growing from your scalp, oil absorbs into the cuticle and the scalp keeps replacing it. On a wig, nothing absorbs. Synthetic fiber has no cuticle at all, and processed human hair wig fiber has very little. The oil sits on the surface as a film. It looks glossy for the first hour, then it attracts dust and lint, weighs the hair down, makes curl patterns clump, and leaves the wig looking greasy at the part and dull at the ends.
