A lace front wig has two zones that need different care. The lace and the hairline are delicate and must stay dry so the adhesive holds. The lengths are ordinary wig hair that gets dull, frizzy and tangled like any other. A refresh treats the lengths without touching the lace. Here is the ten-minute version, whether the wig is glued down or on a stand.
What you need
- A rat-tail comb and a wide-tooth comb
- Oil-Free Wig Shine
- Tangle Free Leave-In Conditioner
- For curly or wavy lace fronts, Frizz-Free Wig Shine Mousse
- A folded paper towel or a hand to shield the hairline
Step 1: Shield the lace
Every spray in this routine is oil-free, but any liquid on the lace can soften the adhesive and lift the edge. Hold a folded paper towel flat along the hairline, or place the flat of your hand there, every time you spray. Aim sprays from behind the ear back, never toward the face.
Step 2: Detangle the lengths from the ends up
Mist the bottom four inches with Tangle Free Leave-In, wait a minute, and comb from the ends up in sections. Hold the hair firmly above the section you are combing so no tension reaches the lace. Nape knots on a glued-down unit come from collars and pillows; a satin bonnet at night halves them.
Step 3: Lift the part and the crown
Glued-down wigs flatten at the part and crown. Use the end of a rat-tail comb to lift the hair at the roots on either side of the part, working an inch back from the hairline so the lace stays undisturbed. For extra lift, mist a little leave-in at the crown and scrunch the roots with your fingertips.
Step 4: Restore shine without oil
Shield the hairline, then mist Oil-Free Wig Shine over the lengths from 8 inches away and comb through once. Oil-based sheen sprays are the most common reason lace fronts look greasy at the part and dusty at the ends by day three. An oil-free shine dries clear and leaves an even reflection that reads as healthy hair.
Step 5: Curly and wavy units, set the pattern
Scrunch a small amount of Frizz-Free Wig Shine Mousse into the lengths and ends, then leave the hair alone until it dries. Touching a drying curl is what creates frizz.
How often to refresh vs. wash
Refresh every two to three wears. Wash a glued-down unit only when you remove it, usually every two to three weeks, and wash a stand-worn lace front every 8 to 10 wears. Over-washing shortens the life of the lace far faster than daily refreshing.
